Boise Spectrum

Boise Spectrum

By AHJ Engineers | May 31, 2012

Our role for this project was to re-design the structural system for each retail building using steel framing members instead of the heavy timber construction elements that were specified in the original contract documents. The purpose of this framing revision was to try and reduce the cost of the structural framing system without altering the architectural appearance of the buildings. This was accomplished with the use of steel girders, joists and columns for the vertical load resisting system in conjunction with moment and braced frames for the lateral load resisting system.

I-Max Theater

I-Max Theater

By AHJ Engineers | May 31, 2012

The structural system for this building consists of open web steel joists and girders supported by load bearing masonry walls in the auditorium and steel frames in the lobby/restroom areas. The major design challenge for this project was the design of the unusually high masonry walls in the auditorium area. The walls are approximately 63’-0” high, of which 10’-0” is an underground concrete wall. The 8” masonry walls are designed to transfer the lateral loads (i.e. wind/seismic) horizontally into the 2’-0” square masonry pilasters that support the roof girders. Another interesting aspect of this project included the detailing/construction of the slab on grade stadium seating in the voluminous auditorium area.

Veltex Building

Veltex Building

By AHJ Engineers | May 31, 2012

This 67,563 square foot five level multi-use structure is constructed of many different structural materials that tie together to resist gravity and lateral loads. The underground parking/basement is made up of concrete walls, columns, and frames that support the upper levels. The upper levels are steel beams with composite concrete and steel floor deck with steel columns to support the gravity loads. The lateral forces are resisted with steel frames over a majority of the structure with a concrete masonry wall at the property line. The main challenge with this project was the numerous transfer columns and girders from level to level to provide a direct load path to the foundation. These transfer elements were required as a result of the varying column layouts at each level. The layouts at each level are driven from its required uses (i.e. retail, office, residential).
