I-Max Theater

The structural system for this building consists of open web steel joists and girders supported by load bearing masonry walls in the auditorium and steel frames in the lobby/restroom areas. The major design challenge for this project was the design of the unusually high masonry walls in the auditorium area. The walls are approximately 63’-0” high, of which 10’-0” is an underground concrete wall. The 8” masonry walls are designed to transfer the lateral loads (i.e. wind/seismic) horizontally into the 2’-0” square masonry pilasters that support the roof girders. Another interesting aspect of this project included the detailing/construction of the slab on grade stadium seating in the voluminous auditorium area.
